Results of a recent survey conducted on Australian PC vendors indicate the demand for Windows 8 tablets. As per this survey, the vendors are “wary” of keeping Android tablet inventory and they are ready to dump Android tablets once Windows 8 becomes available in Australia by mid of next year. Many executives from manufacturers like Samsung and Toshiba are of the view that after the release of Windows 8, the tablet market war boils down to Apple’s iPad and Windows 8 based tablets. Eight out of ten PC vendors in Australia are predicting that Windows 8 tablets would exceed the sales of Android based tablets and they are ready to drop Android tablets.
During the launch of Window 7 Slate Emmanuele Silanesu, head of Samsung’s PC division expressed his confidence in Windows 8 tablets. He predicts that they will be highly popular. As per him, lots of business users who use Windows like to replicate their existing desktop to a tablet. As per reports from DigiTimes, PC manufacturers like Acer, AsusTek and Dell might be withdrawing from the tablet market next year to concentrate on Windows 8 tablets. Android is able to capture only 14% of the Australian tablet market and the release of Windows 8 tablets will “defiantly” put pressure on demand for Android tablets as per Justin White, Product Marketing Manager of Toshiba. According to DigiTimes, several vendors were cutting back on the orders of Android tablets as they don’t see any profit in these. The vendors believe that Windows 8 tablets can deliver more profits due to the high volume of applications that are already available on Windows platform.
Acer is currently struggling in the notebook and PC markets and their sales are dropping in Europe and USA. Acer wants to concentrate on higher-margin products and it’s trying to get a foothold in the Smartphone market. Asus is banking on its quad-core tablet that will be released in 2012 for profits. Debate is going on if the release of Windows 8 on tablets will cause the tablet companies to raise prices because of more app offerings from Microsoft. It’s also possible that they get caught in a price-war as we have seen in the Android space.
