Looks like Intel is clawing its way back to the top after losing out on the tablet space initially. It posted better than expected earnings in this quarter and during the earnings conference call, Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini dropped clues about Windows 8 tablets already being lined up for production. Also according to him Android tablets wouldn’t be in a position to compete against Apple’s iPad until its new version Ice Cream Sandwich is available on a wider scale. Intel entered the Android smart-phone and tablet market with their latest offering – The Medfield processor chip.
According to Mr. Otellini, “Tablets are a little bit about hardware and an awful lot about software”. Talking about Android tablets, he said that “Until you get to Ice Cream Sandwich, the offering isn’t as powerful as with what’s out there with Apple. He is of the view that Android tablets will get better receptivity as Ice Cream Sandwich starts shipping.
In this context, he said that Windows 8 tablets are queued up for production and they form the other part of the test of competing with iPad. Can we relate his observations of Android based tablets to Windows 8 tablets also? Is it all software, tablet-specific apps and the availability of high-quality and full-blown applications like MS office that makes a difference? But how can the developers build full-blown apps and high-resolution multimedia games without leveraging the power of the processor? This debate of software/apps versus hardware in tablets will get louder as Windows 8 tablets keep rolling closer to release date.
