Dell predicts that tablet users next year would pin their choices on either Windows 8 or Android. Working on this assumption, Dell plans to focus their products on these, confirmed an executive from Dell.
Amit Midha, Dell’s president for China and South Asia, said that Dell has been impressed with the impact of Windows 8 on tablet computers. In fact, they find it very promising. Consumers like to have choices. And Windows 8 seems to provide the industry the needed choice.
However, Dell did not give an exact date when it would launch a tablet based on Windows 8. There was also no indication whether it will use ARM-based or Intel x86 processors.
Most likely, Microsoft will introduce a tablet-oriented version of its Windows operating system in the next couple of years. This OS is claimed to be built with touch screen applications in mind. It would also allow for content-creation tasks. Whether people will like it or whether I would like it is something that is left to be seen.
In July, Dell launched a 10-inch Android tablet in China. Remarkably, the sales of this US$466 device are sufficient to shoulder all the production costs of the device, according to Midha.
Let’s not forget that Google’s proposed acquisition of Motorola Mobility will give Google access to Motorola’s patents. This means that Android will become a stronger platform. This only equates to better results for Dell.
Dell’s net profit of $890 million was 63 percent higher this quarter, compared to the same quarter last year. The company discovered it was undeniably strong in the regions of Asia-Pacific and Japan.
Revenue in China rose by 20%, while India saw a 21% increase. While consumer business growth is only at 27%, the growth of the public sector was at 13%. Midha also said that the small and medium business sector was found at 11%, while the large enterprises held 15.
