What was once considered a surplus before is now considered one of the biggest markets available. Gone were the days where people saw their mobile handsets as only tools for calling. Smartphones do so much more, and in this realm, Apple has a lot to be thankful for their iPhone. This is the same realm where HTC has had incredible sales with their own smartphone, although run by Google Android. Samsung is not far behind; their Galaxy S II smartphone is among the most popular smartphones on anybody’s list. The last recorded and published sales record of the Galaxy S II indicates that Samsung sold not less than 5 million units. It is worth noting that this occurred in less than 3 months, and this also didn’t even include sales within the US. Android is the driving force behind the line of smartphones from HTC, Samsung and Motorola Mobility.
It is not a secret that Microsoft has had problems making it Windows Phone OS catch fire. Consumers opted for the iPhones, which are operated with the iOS operating system and of course, Android-driven smartphones. Android dominates the US market share in smartphones. Let’s not forget that HTC and Samsung were also manufacturers of smartphones based on Windows OS for pones. But the lack of comment and statement on these seem to indicate that the smartphones based on this OS is not that successful. Or even if were successful, the amount of success is not worth talking about.
So with Windows 8 and Windows mobile operating systems, Microsoft has not been preparing to compete with the successful strategy of Apple, in terms of smartphone and tablet PCs. Microsoft is after something bigger: Google’s Android.
According to a post in USA Today, Microsoft plans to keep Windows relevant. It’s dominating popularity in the past is not yet beyond reach. It will plan to reclaim this popularity in the Post PC era, where the big players are Google and Apple. The Web site claimed that the Redmond-based company will try its best to get its share in the growing post PC devices. This era is dominated by tablets and smartphones, with tech coming running either Apple OS or Android.
The Windows 8 operating system will be featuring live tiles or the Metro User Interface (Metro UI). This will also be used for the Windows Phone operating system. Compatibility with touch tablet PCs is ensured; the operating system will support not only Intel, but ARM-based processors as well.
According to reports, Samsung is expected to be the first to release a fully-functional tablet running Windows 8. This is the same company behind the widely-popular Galaxy Tab 10.1 which is powered by the Tegra 2 CPU. Since ARM processors power smartphones and tablets, we may expect to see Windows 8 soon in smartphones and tablets.
With the imminent release of Android 4.0 and the devices composing Apple’s flagship, Windows 8 has a lot of competition ahead of it, even before its release. Rumors of an iPhone 5 are slowly getting the attention of reputable sites such as the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and Reuters. With new features, the iPhone 5 plans to make customers forget about even having a regular PC.
Plus, rumors say Apple will introduce a new smartphone next month, the iPhone 5. According to credible sites like Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Reuters, etc, the iPhone 5 will include new features that will most likely attract more customers to buy a smartphone, instead of a regular PC. Both the iPad and the iPhone 4 are already considered as expensive. Still, people buy them. Some people even think that there is no need to buy a PC since they already have a tablet PC or a smartphone. There is no doubt that Microsoft is fully aware of this disturbing trend, and would do all it takes to strike back.
Microsoft plans to introduce a new mobile operating system update that will power upcoming Nokia Windows Phone devices. This is also planned to run the new Windows Phone smartphones from Samsung. To name a few devices where Microsoft plans to regain supremacy, there is the Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash. There is also the HTC Titan. Other devices are estimated to be available to market soon. This update, the Windows Phone Mango software update, will make features like multi-tasking, faster internet browser, and video chatting support available to existing smartphone users. We will have to see whether Windows 8 and its counterpart mobile phone update can give Android a run for their money.
