Qualcomm will hit the quad-core tablet market with ‘Snapdragon’. These are designed to run Microsoft’s yet to be released Windows 8 OS and are expected to appear in tablets by second half of 2012. Snapdragon chips are based on ARM architecture. According to Qualcomm, these can clock up to 2.5 GHz speed, which is almost twice the capability of current dual-core chips. Its Adreno graphics core will support DirectX 9.3 multimedia technology on Windows 8. Windows 8 will work with ARM processors and Microsoft has chosen Qualcomm, Nvidia and Texas Instruments as its chip partners.
Qualcomm’s quad-core chips will be part of their S4 product line. There are no further details from Qualcomm on the release plans of these S4-based tablets. But as per Qualcomm’s officials, they are working on around 30 tablet designs with top device makers. The quad-core market is just getting hot. Nvidia’s first quad-core ARM based processor, Tegra 3 has been out already and Asus’s Transformer Prime runs on Tegra3.
But according to some analysts like Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research, quad-core chips are not that much of a necessity for tablets. Dual-core chips meet most of the requirements. Currently in the PC market, quad-core chips occupy less than 10% of the market and it is highly unlikely that the quad-core percentage breaches this figure in tablet market.
