Enterprise Route for Windows 8 Tablets

It is no secret that 2012 is going to be the year of tablets and they will soon start making inroads into enterprises. As of now tablets are mostly restricted to high-flying executives who need to make presentations and need access when out on the travel. At the moment the Chief Information Officers and the IT teams are still reluctant to spend on tablets. The tablets bought by employees on their own are mostly iPad’s.

There is a perception that the historical investments made by Microsoft in PC’s are holding back the CIO’s from rolling out tablets among the company and are instead waiting for Windows 8, which will be a tablet friendly OS, before taking a final call. But a recent poll among members of silicon.com reveals that this might not be the real factor. Lack of strong case regarding the need of tablets is stopping them from going ahead. The CIO’s are still not sure of “real and meaningful benefit” tablets offer over and above the smartphones and laptops which are already in use.

According to Martin Shaw, director of IT at TDX group, we are yet to see that killer app which can convince the CIO’s in going ahead for an investment . He believes that with the arrival of contextual computing this may change. In Contextual computing, applications can provide information about the device from which they are making a request, so that the experience can be optimized to it. The arrival of Windows 8 can help in a tight integration with Microsoft technologies. In addition, the CIO’s feel that compatibility issues also need to be addressed before roll-out. We can be sure that Microsoft will be paying attention to these requirements and finding ways to address them. After all, enterprise customer is the sure-shot way for Microsoft to tap into tablet market.
