Windows 8 consumer preview release was launched last week and within 24 hours there were1 million downloads. OEM’s definitely will be eyeing to take advantage of this popularity and excitement and Dell might be leading this race. According to CEO Michael Dell, there was a growing demand for a secure Windows tablet that is able to connect to corporate networks and works with all the Windows applications.
The whole point is to attract the business customers and move them away from the recently launched iPad 3. Dell’s CEO is confident of selling computers running on Windows 8 “on the exact day” it becomes available. The release date of Windows 8 is not clear yet, but it is expected later in this year.
iPad is silently making inroads into the corporate market. According to Forrester Research, Apple is all set to sell $10 billion worth of tablets to businesses this year. This market has been the traditional stronghold of Microsoft. According to Amit Midha, president of Dell’s Asia division, Dell will participate in both the tablet and smartphone form factors. But he stressed that the tablet will be a higher priority. The case might is the opposite for Nokia, where they want to focus on using Windows 8 for smartphones. Microsoft might be just counting on Windows 8 and its OEM’s to prevent Apple from cannibalizing the market.
